We went on a trip to the Tate Modern to see the Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John collection. This collection of images and artwork ranges from all different artists like Man Ray, Brassai, Imogen Cunningham, André Kertész, Dorothea Lange and Tina Modotti.
Within the exhibition there is many very iconic images including The Underwater Swimmer by Andre Kertesz, Glass Tears by Man Ray and Migrant Mother by Dorothea Lange. Many of the artworks he had collected were made by artists that we had been researching in class, this exhibition was a good chance to see a lot of the work that we had previously only seen digitally we also got the chance to learn more about these artists.

Dorothea Lange
Throughout Sir Elton John's Collection he has many Dorothea Lange images from the 1930's of migrant families the most famous image being one known as 'Migrant Mother' and another image of a little girl who looks quite troubled. The Migrant Mother became a symbol of the migrant farm workers during The Great Depression, it became so popular because of the look on her face the desperation on her face made everybody realise just what these people were going through at the time. All of her images are framed very carefully only bringing very little detail of the background, making sure that everything can be clearly seen in the foreground, she also kept her framing very tight to make sure the subject was all that could be seen making all of her images very effective.
Irving Penn
These images are some that are featured in Elton John's collection they are images taken by Irving Penn he took lots of portraits of people in this style in a small room or some of them pushed into a corner. Every person he took an image of is different they are all posed in different ways but its to represent them in the best way possible, the way that he chose to position the people within his photographs seems like he's making them trapped and enclosed in a tight space.
