Personal Investigation
Tom Hunter Death of Coltelli
Light-Tom Hunter decided to use the natural light that was available to him and the light is in the centre mainly around the outside is quite dark in comparison. Throughout the image the light is diffused and soft it spreads all over the image the time of day was clearly very important to him as he clearly wanted to 'highlight' the bed and the whole room. The lighting is very warm and neutral it contrasts with the subject matter.
Space- In this image the space is used quite effectively although he has some negative space in the centre, for the image he used only part of the space for the woman as she doesn't fill the space around her the image feels quite bare.
Colour- In the image there's a lack of colour apart from the purple bedsheet and the towel, throughout the images he has various shades of brown. The colours are contrasting the bright colours of the towel and bed sheet but they also complement each other because of the shades of brown complement the purple and red within the image.
Framing- In the image the framing was clearly thought out its been framed so that he can capture all the religious symbols around the room, he wanted to clearly show the link between the woman's position and the symbols around the room. The image has a lot of focus on the left side of the image where the woman is lying with her head on the bed, theres also the most colour in that portion of the image drawing more attention to that side unlike most artists who would want the attention to be in the centre. As the subject matter isn't in the centre its quite unclear exactly what Tom Hunter feels the subject matter is.

Composition- The subject of this image is the woman and all of the religious symbols around her but Hunter decided not to place her in the centre of the image, making the image look slightly off. Within the image there's lots of subtle little things placed around the room around the edges of the image whilst the centre is left empty and bare.
Focus- I think that the focus of this image is the woman and her emotions, her body language is another focus because of the religious imagery its clear that she's posed in a religious way. The image is also in focus and Tom Hunter will achieve this by using a 5 x 4 camera which are quite big on a tripod.

Threshold Concept 8- Photographs have their own visual language and grammar.
'Photographs consist of formal and visual elements and have their own ‘grammar’. These formal and visual elements (such as line, shape, repetition, rhythm, balance etc.) are shared with other works of art. But photographs also have a specific grammar - flatness, frame, time, focus etc. ‘Mistakes’ in photography are often associated with (breaking) the ‘rules’ and expectations of this grammar e.g. out of focus, subject cropped, blur etc. Some photographers enjoy making beautiful images but others are more critical of what beauty means in today's world.'
I chose threshold concept 8 because i feel its the one that closely relates to my work. Throughout my work I focus heavily on the formal elements specifically the use of space, lines and shapes. I like taking photographs of space with strong shapes and lines within them I also enjoy architectural photography.
